A member of the United States House of Representatives, Riley Moore, has said the administration of President Donald Trump will closely monitor Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, signaling heightened US interest in the country’s democratic process.

Moore, a Republican representing West Virginia, made the remarks in an interview with NoireTV published on Sunday, where he addressed questions on the credibility of Nigeria’s upcoming elections and the role of the United States in supporting democratic standards abroad.

According to the lawmaker, Washington will pay close attention not only to the conduct of the elections but also to their outcome, emphasizing that the process must meet acceptable standards.

“What I’d say is that we’re certainly going to be watching these results and how these elections unfold and how they’re executed. And that’s something that myself and the administration are going to be paying very close attention to,” Moore said.

Beyond electoral matters, the US congressman disclosed that the House of Representatives is currently considering an appropriations bill that includes provisions affecting Nigeria, particularly in areas related to religious freedom and security cooperation.

He noted that the proposed legislation, which he co-sponsors alongside Congressman Chris Smith, contains clauses addressing concerns over the persecution of Christians, as well as potential restrictions on US security assistance to Nigeria if certain conditions are not met.

“We’re working on Chris’s bill, which obviously I’m a co-sponsor of that bill. But I’d say, more importantly, what people need to pay attention to is the appropriations bill,” he stated.

Moore added that the bill is likely to become law and would carry binding implications for US-Nigeria relations going forward.

“That bill’s likely to become law… there’s some pretty strong and aggressive language in that bill that’s going to be binding as it relates to our relationship to Nigeria moving forward,” he said.

He further revealed plans to continue engaging with the Trump administration on issues concerning Nigeria, underscoring ongoing discussions that could shape future diplomatic and security ties between both countries.

The development points to increasing scrutiny from Washington as Nigeria prepares for its next electoral cycle.
