Fire Hits Bono Energy Terminal in Lagos

A fire outbreak at the Bono Energy Terminal in the Coconut area of Olodi Apapa, Lagos, on Friday triggered an immediate emergency response from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), with firefighters working to contain the blaze and prevent further escalation.

The incident occurred at the fuel storage facility located along the Apapa-Oworonshoki Expressway, a critical industrial corridor known for its concentration of petroleum depots and logistics operations. As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to establish the cause of the fire.

In a brief statement, LSFRS spokesperson, Shakiru Amodu, confirmed that emergency responders were actively tackling the situation at the scene.

“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently curbing a fire explosion at Bono Energy Terminal on Apapa-Oworonshoki Expressway, by Coconut, Olodi Apapa, Lagos. Update to follow,” Amodu said.

Firefighters were seen deploying containment measures aimed at stopping the flames from spreading to adjoining facilities, a critical concern given the proximity of multiple fuel storage tanks and other combustible infrastructure within the Apapa industrial zone.

At the time of reporting, there was no confirmed information regarding casualties or the extent of damage to the facility. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as firefighting operations continue and assessments are carried out.

The incident has heightened concerns among residents and stakeholders due to the strategic importance of Apapa as a hub for petroleum storage and distribution. Fires in such environments carry significant risks, including the potential for secondary explosions, environmental hazards, and disruptions to fuel supply chains.

Emergency response teams typically prioritise rapid containment in such scenarios to minimise the risk of escalation, particularly in densely built industrial areas where fire can spread quickly across interconnected facilities.

Investigations into the cause of the blaze are expected to commence once the situation is fully brought under control, with safety agencies likely to assess compliance with fire prevention protocols and operational standards at the terminal.
