Chelsea captain and lifelong supporter, Reece James, has officially committed his long-term future to the club, signing a massive new contract extension that will keep the defender at Stamford Bridge until 2032.

The 26-year-old right-back’s journey with the Blues began when he joined the Chelsea Academy at just six years old.

After progressing through the Cobham youth ranks and making his Under-18 debut as a schoolboy, James signed his first professional contract in March 2017. He eventually led a Youth Cup-winning side and earned the Academy Player of the Season award.

Following a highly successful loan spell at Wigan Athletic, where he swept both the Player of the Season and Players’ Player awards, James broke into the Chelsea first team ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

He immediately made an impact by scoring on his debut in a League Cup win over Grimsby Town and went on to become a crucial piece of the squad.

Now an established leader with over 200 appearances, James has helped the Blues secure five major trophies, including the 2021 UEFA Champions League and two FIFA Club World Cups.

Ahead of the 2023/24 season, he was officially named the men’s team captain, successfully leading the squad to UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup victories.

Chelsea Sporting Directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart confirmed the new deal in a joint statement on Friday, praising the club captain for embodying Chelsea’s core values.

“He knows what it means to wear this badge, and having committed his long-term future to Chelsea, we’re excited to continue this journey with him,” the sporting directors stated.

James expressed deep emotion regarding his prolonged commitment to his boyhood club.

“I am over the moon to have extended my contract. Chelsea means so much to me. I have always said I want my peak years to be here, and I truly believe we have everything it takes to build on our previous successes,” James said following the announcement.

The captain added that he is optimistic about the club’s current trajectory.

“I’m excited for the future under this ownership, Sporting Directors, Coach, and all the staff, and hopefully we will lift many more trophies together over the coming years,” he concluded.

With two decades already spent within the Chelsea system, the lengthy extension ensures James will continue to be the face of the Stamford Bridge outfit well into his thirties.
