The Football Association (FA) has ended speculation regarding the long-term future of Thomas Tuchel, announcing on Thursday that the German tactician has signed a contract extension to remain as England manager until the 2028 European Championship.

The decision comes as a major boost for the Three Lions just months before the 2026 World Cup in North America, providing much-needed stability and clarity for the national team.

Tuchel, who officially took charge in January 2025, was originally on an 18-month contract that was set to expire following the conclusion of the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

However, the FA has moved decisively to secure his services for the next cycle, which includes the highly anticipated Euro 2028 to be hosted by the United Kingdom and Ireland.

“I am thrilled to extend my journey with this special group of players,” Tuchel said in a statement released by the FA.

“The opportunity to lead England into a major tournament on home soil in 2028 is a privilege that no manager would take lightly. But first, our full focus remains on making history in America this summer.”

The extension signals the FA’s absolute confidence in the former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss. FA CEO Mark Bullingham described the renewal as a “logical step” to ensure long-term planning.

“Thomas has brought a clear identity and a winning mentality to the squad since his arrival,” Bullingham stated.

“With the World Cup on the horizon and a home Euros to follow, we wanted to remove any uncertainty and ensure we have the best possible leadership in place for what promises to be a historic era for English football.”

The new deal effectively ends rumors linking Tuchel with a return to club management after the World Cup.

By committing to 2028, Tuchel is now tasked with not only challenging for the global crown in 2026 but also ending England’s long wait for a major trophy on home turf two years later.

England fans will now look forward to the World Cup with the assurance that their manager is committed to the long-term project, as the Three Lions aim to go one step further than their recent near-misses on the international stage.
