A tanker truck conveying petroleum products on Sunday caught fire after it was involved in a road accident opposite the Odukpani Local Government Secretariat in Cross River State, destroying several shops and affecting vehicles in the area.

The incident occurred on October 4, 2026, when the tanker reportedly overturned following the accident, spilling its contents and triggering a fire that quickly spread to nearby shops and buildings.

The blaze caused significant damage to businesses and property around the scene, while vehicles within the vicinity were also reportedly affected.

The tanker driver was said to have been trapped inside the vehicle after the accident and subsequent fire.

He was, however, rescued and immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention.

The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying officers attached to the Odukpani Division were deployed to the scene following the accident.

The police personnel reportedly secured the area and took measures to prevent further danger to residents, motorists and other road users.

The command did not immediately disclose the extent of the damage or whether any other person was injured in the incident.

The cause of the accident was also not immediately established, while investigations are expected to determine the circumstances that led to the tanker overturning and catching fire.

The incident has once again raised concerns about the risks associated with petroleum-product tankers operating on major roads, particularly in areas with businesses and residential structures close to highways.

Authorities are expected to assess the affected area and determine the extent of damage caused by the fire.

The police urged motorists and members of the public to exercise caution around accident scenes and comply with instructions from security personnel to avoid secondary incidents.
