Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, a member of the House of Representatives representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, has resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The lawmaker, who is the son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, confirmed his defection in a statement released on Thursday shortly after the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, formally announced his resignation letter during plenary.
Bello said his decision to leave the APC was official and declared that he would seek re-election to the House under the platform of the ADC.
“A few hours ago, the Rt. Hon. Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, announced my letter of resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and my formal move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at plenary,” he stated.
“I am now a member of the ADC, and I will be seeking re-election to continue representing the good people of Kaduna North Federal Constituency on this platform.”

The development marks another political shift within Kaduna State politics ahead of the next election cycle and comes amid growing realignments among opposition parties seeking to strengthen their positions before 2027.
Although Bello did not disclose detailed reasons for leaving the APC, his move is expected to fuel fresh political conversations given his family’s longstanding influence within the ruling party.
The ADC has recently intensified efforts to attract influential politicians and expand its national structure as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
