Nollywood actress Opeyemi Aiyeola has officially joined the growing list of Nigerian celebrities speaking out against the country’s worsening security crisis.
In an emotional video shared on Instagram, the 48-year-old film star addressed the recent deadly terrorist attack in Jos, Plateau state. She expressed deep dismay that the tragic incident was not receiving adequate attention across social media platforms.
Aiyeola used the opportunity to urge her colleagues, particularly those who have been vocal in their political affiliations, to critically reexamine their consciences and prioritize the common good over personal gain.
While acknowledging that everyone is entitled to their political choices, the actress reminded Nigerians with influence to seriously consider the future of their children.
“This video is very emotional. I just want to encourage the wonderful people who have got voice especially on social media and on ground in Nigeria.
“I would like to beg to search genuinely into our conscience. We all woke up to another news of sad, terrorist attack in Jos,” Aiyeola stated in her broadcast.
She pointed out the troubling lack of public outrage surrounding the recent killings.
“But unfortunately, it is not trending as usual. It is another political season and I genuinely would like Nigerians on ground and those with voices and platforms on social media to search through their consciences and try to do the right thing,” she noted.
The actress further acknowledged the pressures of the entertainment industry and society but pleaded for a moral awakening.
“I genuinely understand the importance of money, influence, affluence and wealth. But above all, let us allow our conscience lead us and let us all try to do the right thing.
“Money, connections and influence are extremely important, but if we can at least for once try and allow our conscience lead us. Sometimes we do not do things because of our own selfish interest,” she added.
Aiyeola also clarified her intentions, ensuring her message was not taken as a direct attack on any specific individual.
“My beautiful, wonderful colleagues, I am not throwing a shades at anybody and obviously no one can tell you where and how to swing politically. Genuinely I am not chasing clout, you guys know I do not chase clout, I have not even been active of social media,” she explained.
Concluding her heartfelt appeal, she issued a stark warning to those ignoring the ongoing security crisis.
“Please colleagues but you should think of your children’s future. Nigerians living in Nigeria, let us all understand that if you all are saying it is not my business, one day it will genuinely be your business.”
