The Ghana Football Association officially announced the dismissal of head coach Otto Addo on Tuesday, making the sweeping change just over 70 days before the Black Stars are set to compete in the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
The decision to sack the 50-year-old manager came hours after a narrow 2-1 friendly defeat to Germany in Stuttgart on Monday. During the match, the German hosts had to rely on a last-gasp goal from Deniz Undav to secure the victory against the West African side.
The loss marked a troubling pattern for the Black Stars, as it was their fourth consecutive defeat under Addo’s leadership. The team’s poor run of form was particularly highlighted last week when they were heavily thrashed 5-1 by Austria.
In an official statement confirming the managerial change, the national football governing body expressed gratitude for Addo’s tenure.
“The association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours,” the Ghana Football Association stated. The association added that it will “communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.”
Addo had been at the helm of the Ghanaian national team since March 2024. His sudden departure leaves the squad in a critical transition period as they prepare to face tough opposition at the World Cup in North America this summer.
The Black Stars have been drawn into a challenging group alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
