Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, provided a crucial assist to help Turkish champions Galatasaray clinch a slim 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie on Tuesday at RAMS Park.
The evening began on a highly emotional note for the 27-year-old Nigerian international. Before kick-off, as the Champions League anthem echoed through the stadium, Galatasaray supporters fulfilled a promise to honor Osimhen’s late mother by unveiling a special tifo display at one end of the stadium.
An emotional Osimhen struggled to hold back tears but quickly composed himself to deliver a match-winning contribution.
Despite Liverpool applying early pressure, the hosts struck first just seven minutes into the encounter. Osimhen rose to meet a corner, heading the ball back across the face of the goal perfectly for Gabonese midfielder Mario Lemina, who nodded it past Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Galatasaray continued to threaten, with Osimhen narrowly missing a golden opportunity to double the lead moments later when his free header drifted agonizingly wide. The Nigerian forward had another chance later in the first half but blazed his effort over the crossbar.
Liverpool, featuring prominent attacking displays from Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitiké, saw their fair share of possession. However, Galatasaray carved out the clearer chances, including a powerful effort from Davinson Sánchez that forced a spectacular flying save from Mamardashvili. Resolute defending from the English side also kept attackers Noa Lang and Gabriel Sara at bay.
The second half delivered more end-to-end action. Osimhen briefly thought he had extended the lead when he put the ball in the back of the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Liverpool’s defense showed signs of vulnerability, with Ibrahima Konaté nearly punished for an under-hit backpass.
Liverpool pressed for an equalizer, but Ekitiké squandered a major one-on-one opportunity when Galatasaray goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır brilliantly stuck out a leg to deflect the ball wide. The Reds also had a goal of their own disallowed after a handball by Konaté.
Despite a frantic final 10 minutes, Galatasaray held firm to secure the victory, ending Liverpool’s three-match away winning streak across all competitions.
Liverpool will now look to overturn the 1-0 deficit when they host Galatasaray for the decisive second leg at Anfield next week.
