The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Emmanuel Analike, the Chief Executive Officer of Netnaija Media Enterprises, at the Kuje Correctional Centre over alleged copyright violations.
Analike was officially arraigned on Wednesday by the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC). According to the prosecution, the Netnaija CEO is accused of utilizing his popular online platform to illegally distribute movies and other digital content owned by third parties, thereby making them available for unauthorized public download.
Gladys Isaac-Ojo, the head of the NCC’s legal unit and prosecution counsel, informed the court that Analike is facing charges under Section 44(1)(a) of the Copyright Act, 2022.
The charges are directly connected to alleged copyright violations involving the widespread distribution of digital media content through his platform.
When the charges were read in court, Analike pleaded not guilty to the allegations leveled against him.
Following the plea, his legal counsel, Nnemeka Ejiofor, moved an application for his bail. Ejiofor informed the court that the bail application had been formally filed on Monday, supported by a 23-paragraph affidavit and a written address.
