Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has urged residents of the state to ignore recent comments and political moves by some opposition leaders, describing them as distractions from the ongoing efforts to develop the state.

Governor Otti made the call on Saturday while speaking at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Umuoriehi, Umuahia North Local Government Area, during the dedication of the church building. He said the individuals behind the renewed political alignment against his administration were the same leaders who, in his view, failed to deliver meaningful development to Abia during their time in office.

The governor was reacting to reports of a political alliance formed by former Abia State governors Orji Uzor Kalu, Theodore Orji and Okezie Ikpeazu, which is aimed at stopping his re-election bid. Otti dismissed the move as an attempt by those who had previously mismanaged the state to regain relevance.

According to him, Abians are already seeing clear differences in governance and leadership style, stressing that his administration remains focused on transparency, accountability and people-oriented development rather than political scheming.

“The same people gathering today are those who had the opportunity to develop Abia and failed,” Otti said. “Our duty is not to trade words but to continue delivering on the mandate given to us by the people.”

He urged residents to judge his government based on visible projects and reforms, adding that his administration has laid a solid foundation for sustainable growth across critical sectors, including infrastructure, education, healthcare and public service reforms.

Governor Otti also reaffirmed his commitment to leading with integrity and inclusiveness, saying his government would not be distracted by what he described as politics of bitterness and desperation.

The former governors named in the alliance have not officially responded to Otti’s remarks, but political observers say the development signals an early intensification of political activities ahead of the next election cycle in the state.

Speaking further at the church event, Otti congratulated the congregation on the completion of the church building and encouraged religious leaders to continue praying for peace, unity and progress in Abia State.

He noted that faith-based institutions play a vital role in moral development and social cohesion, adding that his administration would continue to partner with religious organisations in promoting good governance and community development.

The event was attended by church leaders, government officials and members of the local community.
