Operatives of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) at the Seme Border Command have intercepted a suspected female human trafficker and rescued six potential victims of trafficking.
The arrest was made during a routine stop-and-search operation along the border corridor, as officers identified irregularities in the travelers’ documentation and responses during interrogation.
According to sources at the command, the suspect, whose identity is yet to be fully disclosed pending further investigation, was attempting to smuggle the six women out of the country to a neighboring West African nation, believed to be Cote d’Ivoire.
The victims, aged between 19 and 24, were reportedly lured with promises of lucrative jobs abroad. However, none of them possessed valid travel documents, a red flag that alerted the immigration officers on duty.
Confirming the development, the Comptroller of the Seme Border Command stated that the service remains on high alert to curb the menace of human trafficking and irregular migration.
“Our officers are trained to spot the signs of trafficking. These young women were being led away under false pretenses without proper documentation.
“We have taken the suspect into custody, and the victims are currently receiving counseling,” the Comptroller noted.
The NIS has confirmed that the suspect and the six rescued victims will be handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation, rehabilitation, and prosecution.
This latest arrest underscores the renewed vigor of the NIS in 2026 to secure Nigeria’s borders and protect vulnerable citizens from exploitation by criminal syndicates.
