Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has said he will undertake broad consultations before deciding whether to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Jonathan made the disclosure on Thursday in Abuja while addressing a delegation of supporters who visited his office to encourage him to join the presidential race ahead of the next general election.

The former president did not give a definite answer on his political plans but stated that any decision regarding the 2027 election would be taken after careful consultation with relevant stakeholders and consideration of the national interest.

He stressed the need for patriotism, peaceful coexistence, and credible electoral processes, insisting that Nigeria’s progress depends largely on unity and political stability.

“It’s only patriotic citizens that build their nations,” Jonathan said, adding that “the key thing we need in this country is peace.”

Jonathan also called on young Nigerians to remain actively involved in the democratic process, particularly through participation in elections and civic engagement.

According to him, credible elections and peaceful political conduct are essential for sustainable development and national growth.

The visit by the supporters has further fuelled speculations about Jonathan’s possible return to active partisan politics ahead of 2027, although the former president has yet to formally declare any ambition.

Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, has remained influential in African diplomacy and democratic advocacy since leaving office.

Political observers say his latest remarks are likely to intensify conversations within the country’s political space as consultations and alignments ahead of the 2027 elections continue to gather momentum.
