Former Governor of Imo State, Dr. Achike Udenwa, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move seen as a major boost to the party’s profile in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Udenwa formalised his membership on Thursday at his Amaifeke Ward in Orlu Local Government Area, where he was registered as member number 001. The development signals the former governor’s entry into active partisan engagement under a new political platform.
The former governor was registered by the ward secretary, Hon. Anthony Okoro, while the ward chairman, Engr. Uzonna Oriowe, presented him with his ADC membership card. Party leaders and supporters who attended the event included the ADC Orlu LGA Chairman, Chief Aloma Uchenna, alongside other ward and local government officials.

Speaking shortly after his registration, Udenwa said his decision to join the ADC followed wide consultations and careful reflection on the country’s political direction. He noted that the party offers a credible platform for accountable leadership and people-oriented governance.
According to him, Nigeria and Imo State in particular require leaders who are committed to transparency, inclusion and service delivery, adding that the ADC’s principles align with his vision for good governance. He urged party members to remain united and focused as preparations begin towards future elections.
Udenwa also called on Imo residents to support the ADC’s efforts to build a strong alternative capable of addressing the state’s socio-economic challenges. He stressed that meaningful political change can only be achieved through collective commitment and grassroots mobilisation.
Party leaders welcomed Udenwa into the ADC, describing his defection as a significant milestone that would strengthen the party’s structure and appeal across the state. They expressed confidence that his experience and political influence would attract more supporters ahead of the 2027 polls.
Dr. Achike Udenwa served as governor of Imo State from 1999 to 2007 and remains a prominent political figure in the South-East. His move to the ADC is expected to reshape political calculations in the state as parties position themselves for the next general elections.
