Award-winning Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has recounted the circumstances surrounding the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, alleging medical negligence in his care.

Adichie made the disclosure in a statement issued on Saturday, days after the toddler passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. In the emotional account, the celebrated writer described a series of events that, according to her, raised serious concerns about the quality and timeliness of medical attention her son received before his death.

While refraining from naming specific medical personnel or facilities, Adichie said her family sought professional help promptly after noticing troubling symptoms in the child. She alleged that their concerns were not treated with the urgency required and that critical warning signs were either overlooked or inadequately addressed.

According to her, the delays and decisions made during the course of treatment contributed to a rapid deterioration in Nkanu’s condition, ultimately leading to his death. She described the loss as devastating and said no parent should have to endure such pain, especially under circumstances that could have been prevented.

Adichie stressed that her decision to speak publicly was not driven by anger alone, but by a desire to draw attention to systemic issues within healthcare delivery, particularly accountability and patient safety. She said families deserve clear communication, thorough examinations and timely interventions when seeking medical care.

The author noted that she is considering all available options to ensure that what she described as lapses in care are properly examined, adding that silence would only enable similar tragedies to occur in the future.

The statement has sparked widespread reactions across social media, with fellow writers, public figures and fans expressing condolences and solidarity with Adichie and her family. Many also echoed her call for improved standards and oversight in medical practice.

Medical experts say allegations of negligence are serious and should be subjected to thorough, independent investigation to establish facts and responsibility. They note that transparent review processes are essential for maintaining trust in healthcare systems.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is internationally acclaimed for works such as Half of a Yellow Sun, Americanah and Purple Hibiscus, and is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential literary voices.

As condolences continue to pour in, Adichie asked for privacy for her family as they mourn their son, while urging authorities and relevant institutions to take patient safety concerns seriously to prevent similar losses.
