Former Super Eagles head coach José Peseiro has delivered a glowing verdict on Ademola Lookman, asserting that the 28-year-old forward has evolved to match the influence of Victor Osimhen in the Nigerian national team.

In an interview with Spanish outlet Marca, Peseiro, who guided Nigeria to the AFCON final in 2024, insisted that while Osimhen has long been the team’s poster boy, Lookman’s recent performances have elevated him to equal standing.

Peseiro highlighted Lookman’s decisive contributions, particularly at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he directly contributed to 11 goals (six goals and five assists) across two tournaments.

“Osimhen was the star, but Lookman has not been behind him. In fact, he has scored more goals. Now they are both key figures,” Peseiro stated.

He pointed to Lookman’s historic hat-trick in the Europa League final for Atalanta as further proof of his elite status.

Commenting on Lookman’s recent move to Atlético Madrid, Peseiro expressed confidence that the winger would thrive in La Liga.

He dismissed suggestions that Lookman is difficult to manage, describing him as a “grounded” professional who flourishes when given freedom.

“Playing like that three days after arriving can only be explained by his quality,” Peseiro said, referring to Lookman’s immediate impact in Spain.

“If you give him freedom and accept his boldness and creativity, Lookman has the potential to produce outstanding seasons and make an era at Atlético,” he added.

The Portuguese tactician revealed that Lookman’s rise is fueled by a desire to prove a point to England, the country of his birth, which stopped calling him up after his youth exploits.

“For him, it is a challenge and a very important step because he has achieved the objective he always had… and continuing to prove to England that they made a mistake with him,” Peseiro added.

With his defensive work rate improved by his time in Italy and his attacking instincts sharper than ever, Peseiro believes Lookman is now a “complete” player ready to conquer Spanish football just as he did in Serie A.
