Nigerian singer, Aituaje Iruobe, widely known as Waje, has opened up about her past struggles with body insecurity and how she eventually learned to embrace her appearance.
In a recent appearance on the Her Next Chapter podcast hosted by Tope Olowoniyan, the 44-year-old vocal powerhouse recounted the extreme measures she took during her twenties to conceal her shape.
She admitted that she was deeply uncomfortable with her upper body and would often resort to wearing multiple undergarments at once.
“Even before I had my child, I have always been heavy at the top,” she revealed during the interview. “I used to hide it. In my 20s, I used to wear like three bras. I used to be very uncomfortable about how heavy I was at the top.”
Waje explained that her perspective underwent a major transformation after she became a mother. Embracing motherhood helped her develop a more positive relationship with her body.
“Things really changed for me. Motherhood also played a big time in how I was seeing my body. I became more comfortable,” the singer added.
She also credited her close friends, including rapper M.I Abaga and celebrity dancer Kaffy, for providing the crucial support system she needed to build her self-esteem.
“The encouragement helped me to build thick skin and ignore negative comments from people,” she said.
This recent revelation adds another layer to the singer’s candid conversations about her personal life.
Last year, Waje also spoke openly about the strict, non-negotiable standards she holds for any potential future marriage.
