Billionaire rap mogul, Jay-Z, has finally cleared the air on the swirling internet conspiracy theories that suggested he intentionally selected Kendrick Lamar for the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show as a deliberate, calculated move to undermine Drake during their highly publicized feud.

The intense rivalry between Drake and Lamar captivated the music world last year, with fans and fellow celebrities rapidly taking sides.

Lamar’s explosive 2024 run fueled by chart-topping diss tracks like ‘Meet the Grahams’ and ‘Not Like Us’, was widely viewed by the culture as a decisive victory over the Canadian superstar.

The momentum spilled into 2025, culminating in Lamar’s triumphant appearances at the Grammy Awards and the Super Bowl.

However, Lamar’s selection for the massive NFL stage sparked a wave of accusations directed at Jay-Z.

Because his entertainment agency, Roc Nation, has co-produced the Super Bowl halftime show since 2019, critics alleged that the hip-hop icon used his executive power to pick sides in the feud and publicly humiliate Drake.

In a recent, candid interview with GQ Magazine, Jay-Z firmly shut down the rumors, insisting that the decision to book Lamar was rooted purely in merit and completely divorced from the ongoing rap battle.

“What do I have to do with that? I chose the guy who was having a monster year. I think it was the right choice.

“It was not in some alliance with a battle. Would I care about those two guys battling? It has nothing to do with me,” Jay-Z stated matter-of-factly.

Pushing back aggressively against the notion that he owed anyone an explanation, the Roc Nation founder reminded the public of his independent stature in the industry.

He expressed frustration at how the internet dragged multiple bystanders into a non-existent conspiracy.

“Have at it, have fun. Not just me, they dragged everybody into it, like everyone was part of this conspiracy to undermine Drake I guess.

“Like what the fk? I am f***g Jay Z. Respectfully for what? To what end? It could be that these guys do not just like each other, and I think they have not liked each other for a long time,” he remarked.

Reflecting on the nature of historic hip-hop rivalries, Jay-Z drew parallels between the Drake-Lamar conflict and his own legendary feud with fellow New York rapper Nas.

He noted that such deep-seated animosity rarely happens overnight; rather, it is the result of long-brewing tensions.

Interestingly, Jay-Z also took the opportunity to express a lingering sense of regret over how his battle with Nas played out decades ago.

“I think this has been brewing, just like me, and Nas were brewing. It did not happen at the quarter stamp; it was a whole bunch of stuff leading up to that point.

“It was like little things that led up to that point, and when it happened, it happened. I actually regret that because I really like Nas, he is a really nice guy,” he reflected.
