In a bold political move that could reshape Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race, former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have joined forces under a newly revitalized African Democratic Congress (ADC) to form a unified opposition coalition aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement, made earlier this week in Abuja, marks the most significant opposition alignment since the 2015 alliance that brought APC to power. Political observers say the coalition is designed to counter growing fears of one-party dominance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative in the next election cycle.
“This is not just about power; it’s about rescuing Nigeria’s democracy from drift,” said Atiku Abubakar, a two-time presidential runner and former Vice President.
“We’re building a movement that puts people first, beyond party lines,” Peter Obi added.
The opposition bloc aims to:
Consolidate support bases across the PDP, Labour Party, and other minor parties.
Present a joint presidential ticket to avoid splitting votes.
Push electoral reforms ahead of 2027 to level the political playing field.

The coalition’s leadership hinted at a national convention in late 2025, where a consensus candidate could emerge. Though both Atiku and Obi are considered frontrunners, aides say internal primaries will guide the final decision.
In response, APC spokespersons downplayed the coalition’s significance, calling it a “recycled political alliance driven by desperation, not vision.” However, the ruling party is reportedly monitoring the new development closely, especially as defections and intra-party tensions grow within its own ranks.
This emerging coalition could reignite competitive politics in Nigeria, especially if it successfully replicates the playbook that toppled the PDP in 2015. With economic hardship, rising insecurity, and public dissatisfaction lingering, the 2027 race is shaping up to be fiercely contested.
