India’s Swapnil Kushare could not improve on his opening mark of 2.15m in the men’s high jump qualification round and will not advance to the final at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Kushare was successful in his first attempt of 2.15m but failed to make any of his three attempts for a 2.20m count. The qualification standard, meanwhile, was 2.29m.

The 29-year-old Indian high jump athlete, as a result, will rank second last in Group B of the qualification event.

Meanwhile, Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco clocked a season best of 8:06.05 to successfully defend his Olympic title.

The USA’s Kenneth Brooks registered a personal best of 8:06.41 and won the silver medal while Kenyan runner Abraham Kibiwot notched 8:06.47, a season best, to bag the bronze.

Score: Avinash Sable (IND) finished 11th with a time of 8:14.18 in the men’s 3000m steeplechase final.

Mirabai Chanu of India was ranked fourth and narrowly missed out on a medal in the women’s 49kg weightlifting final at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Wednesday.

A silver medallist at Tokyo three years ago, Mirabai could successfully lift a total of 199kg, 88kg in snatch and 111kg in clean and jerk.

The Indian weightlifter tried a 114kg attempt in clean and jerk but failed to make it count.

The People’s Republic of China’s Hou Zhihui, meanwhile, successfully defended her title with a total of 206, while shattering the clean and jerk Olympic record with a 117kg lift.

Mihaela Valentina Cambei of Romania clinched silver with a total of 205kg and Thailand’s Surodchana Khambao settled for bronze, logging 200kg.

Score: Mirabai Chanu lifts a total of 199kg to finish fourth in the women’s 49kg weightlifting final.
