Egypt defeated Paraguay 5–4 on penalties shootout to guarantee their spot in the 2024 Olympic semi-finals in Paris. After Diego Gomez had given the South Americans the lead, Ibrahim Adel resumed his heroics in the French capital to square the score for the African giants in the 87th minute, forcing extra time. Then, Adel scored the game-winning spot-kick to win and emerge victorious.

Ibrahim Adel was Egypt’s saviour in a tense Olympic Games quarter-final with Paraguay in boiling Marseille as he struck a late equaliser for his side in normal time before converting the winner in a penalty shoot-out.

Paraguay had shipped seven goals in the group stage, but produced an uncompromising defensive display against Rogerio Micale’s team and struck a fine opener on 71 minutes when Diego Gómez smashed a fine finish low into the net.

They seemed destined to secure progress to the last four until Adel popped up on 88 minutes for the Pharaohs when he emerged unmarked to head home from Zizi’s pinpoint cross.

Egypt and Paraguay are in extra time, vying for a coveted spot in the men’s semi-final.

Paraguay scored the first goal in the 71st minute, courtesy of Diego Gomez. But Egypt found an equalizer in the 88th minute from Adel Ibrahim.

The winner will play either France or Argentina.

Spain and Morocco have already clinched their spot in the first semi-final, taking place Monday.
